Emerging technologies

What is Hydrogen?

When combined with other elements, it makes all sorts of things possible – water, food and even the human body. Hydrogen may well be the original champion on earth – since it is the oldest and most abundant element found in all growing things and making up 75% of our entire universe.

Hydrogen can be produced from diverse domestic resources with the potential for near-zero greenhouse gas emissions. Once produced, hydrogen generates electrical power in a fuel cell, emitting only water vapour and warm air.

Climate crisis

We all need energy to power our daily lives and this demand continues to grow. 2019 marked a historical high for energy-related carbon emissions. To limit global warming by reducing our carbon emissions we need to find cleaner ways to produce, store and use energy. If we put hydrogen at the core of this energy transformation, we can help reduce the world’s carbon footprint and improve air quality in our cities and urban areas. It can help to clean up our transport and buildings.

Hydrogen in transport

Transport technology has continued to change over many thousands of years and driven history itself. We are now at a new crossroads where climate change and new technologies are set to define how we travel and transport goods in the 21st century and beyond.

Hydrogen emerging technologies are now receiving high levels of government funding to support research and development across all industries. The hope for hydrogen in transport is that it will help to meet our 2050 net zero targets at an increasingly fast pace.
